Some ABC Poker Jargons

Just like there are numerous strategies that can be observed while play a game of poker, there are also many words and phrases used in the game that a player should be familiar with. There exists, some commonly used words or terms that a player may come across with during a game. Some of which are listed below.

Act: An "act" means to perform a play which would involve either the act of betting, calling, raising or folding at the needed time.

Action: An action can mean the turn of the player wherein he is required to act. It could also infer to the gambler's willingness to place a wager, or to place a bet.

Action button: Is a marker that is just like a "kill" button, wherein the player can make an extra wager. In the case of a high-low, 7-card stud game, an action button is given to the victor of what we call a "scoop pot" that is over a certain amount. This would say that the player would be ordered to post a certain amount to a full bet that would represent a completion of the "bring-in" during the next pot.

Add-on: This means that a player should buy more chips before busting.

Advertising: This is an act of the player to make an obvious exposure of his cards so that he may give a false impression of one's playing style to his opponents in order to mislead. Bluffing is a part of this act.

Ammo: This is a term used to represent a gambler's playing chips.

Angle: This would involve unethical play in which the technicalities are perfectly legal.

Bank: This would refer to the "house" or the person who gives out chips and is responsible for making sure the winners get paid after the game.

Bankroll: A term used to label the amount of cash that a gambler must bet during his poker playing days. The word could also refer to a very wealthy player.

Bluff-catcher: The word refers to a hand that will not be able to win unless an opponent's bet is just a bluff.

Board: This is the set of cards found in a card game.

Boat: This is a slang term which means that the player has a "full house".

Broomcorn's Uncle: This phrase is often used when by the other players in describing a player that they think is "tight". Cow: A player is called a "cow" when he shares a buy-in with another player, intending to split the resulting wins after the game play.

Cripple: Is when a player possesses an advantageous hand, making it difficult or impossible for other players to catch up to him.
